The Lowdown

Pinot Noir, the predominant grape of Burgundy in France and more recently hailed for it’s growing quality in Oregon & Washington State, is now finally making moves in New Zealand (and even Tasmania). Martinsborough sits at the southern end of the North island, an area of Artisan producers focused on the production of Pinot Noir & Sauvignon Blanc. The producers here ensure low yields of grapes, which mean that all the best nutrients and quality from the soil in concentrated in the few grapes produced. None of that mass-produced grocery store wine here. Why We Love It

The owners, Terry & Mary Peabody searched around the whole world for years looking for the perfect place to start a vineyard. We stand with anyone who puts that kind of research in. More importantly, they are beast-mode when it comes to the environment and community. They implement eco-friendly practices across the vineyard including waste reduction, recycling, as well as reducing energy consumption, as well as offsetting carbon emissions by planting native flora around the site. From a community standpoint, they have created a trust around the site, so that it can never been sold, thereby ensuring that the local community comes first. And lastly, they just started a Christmas trust that ensures the 23% of children living in poverty around Hawke’s Bay receive a scooter, trike or a skateboard as well as a ball and a book each Christmas. Their dedication has won them the award of 2014 New World Winery of the Year by Wine Enthusiast. Craggy is just damn good wine by damn good people.
